Manchester Square

In our role as Landscape Architect of the Portman Estate, DSDHA’s proposal was to create a new public space in Manchester Square, between the Gardens and the Wallace Collection, and improve pedestrian safety and accessibility before the opening of the Elizabeth Line and other local infrastructure enhancements. The new space was to offer a place of respite for residents, workers, and visitors by introducing seating and greening that complement nearby green spaces, such as the lawn at the Wallace Collection and Paddington Street Gardens.

Recognising the environmental and wellbeing benefits of urban greening, the proposal would enhance the horticultural value and biodiversity of Manchester Square. The design thoughtfully considers factors such as sun and shade, seasonal changes, and species selection to support a resilient and welcoming environment.

The project also sought to celebrate the cultural and historic significance of Manchester Square. It acknowledged the historic layout and landscape relationship between the square and Hertford House and aimed to strengthen this connection through an enhanced public realm and newly pedestrianised areas.
