Edmund de Waal Studio and Gallery II
A Century of the Artist's Studio, lecture series by the Architecture Foundation
DSDHA co-founding Director David Hills delivers a talk on the studio’s long-standing relationship with ceramic artist Edmund de Waal. DSDHA first worked with Edmund in 2005 on a modest studio in South London. The growing scale of his trade, soon demanded larger facilities.
In 2013, DSDHA and de Waal collaborated again on a second, larger scale project in a converted 1960s munitions warehouse. Referencing Edmund’s own practice in its core design values, DSDHA helped design a studio and gallery space that works in confluence with its pre-existing setting, bespoke and flexible to the artist's variety of needs.
This talk was recorded as part of a lecture series organised by the Architecture Foundation with the Whitechapel Gallery and ran alongside an exhibition of the same shown in early 2022. The series explored both historical trends in studio design as well as contemporary challenges faced in delivering spaces for artists. More information on the exhibition and its accompanying lectures can be found on the Whitechapel Gallery’s website.
